Brunei's Currency and Monetary Board was established in 1967, just a year before this series entered circulation, replacing the British-administered currency arrangement that had tied the territory to the Malaya and British Borneo dollar. The 1st portrait designation matters here: Hassanal Bolkiah had just been crowned the 29th Sultan in October 1967 following his father's abdication, and the portrait on this series was replaced with a revised likeness before the decade was out.
