Andrew Bertie, elected Grand Master in 1988, was the first Briton to hold the position in the Order's modern history and a direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots. The 1989 gold issues appeared early in his tenure, which would run until his death in 2008 — the longest Grand Mastership of the twentieth century.
The Order has issued no legal tender since losing Malta to Napoleon in 1798. These gold scudi exist purely as numismatic issues, struck under the Order's sovereign authority recognized by over a hundred states despite its lack of territorial governance.
