Thailand's 1957 coinage program came during a period of significant political instability — Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat seized power in a coup that same year, deposing Prime Minister Phibun Songkhram, who had himself come to power through a coup in 1947. The Royal Thai Mint continued issuing coins uninterrupted through the transition, a practical necessity given how badly small denominations circulated in rural markets.
The Y#79a designation distinguishes this bronze composition from the earlier aluminum issues of the same type under Y#79.
