Obverse description The Latvian state coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield with a rising sun in the upper half and two addorsed lions rampant in the lower half, flanked on either side by a staff bearing a banner. Three five-pointed stars arc above the shield, symbolizing the three historical regions of Latvia. The date 1922 is divided by the shield, with '19' to the left and '22' to the right. The legend LATVIJA curves along the lower portion of the field, with the engraver's name HUGUENIN inscribed at the base.
