| Obverse description | The obverse field is entirely occupied by a multi-line Arabic inscription arranged within a decorative dotted inner border of octagonal outline, itself surrounded by a continuous outer beaded rim. The central legend, rendered in bold incuse Arabic script across four lines, reads the full royal titulature of Sultan Said Ali ibn Said Omar of Ngazidja. Ornamental foliate and scroll devices fill the spandrels between the inner cartouche and the outer border, lending the design an Islamic calligraphic character consistent with late 19th-century French colonial coinage produced for Muslim sultanates. |
