By 1916, the German East Africa campaign under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck had severed the colony from any resupply from Europe, forcing emergency currency production entirely in-country. The Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Zeitung G.m.b.H. — a newspaper printer, not a security press — was the only facility available in Dar es Salaam capable of the job. The result was a series produced under blockade conditions with whatever paper and ink could be sourced locally.
Pick 42 is among the more frequently encountered of the 1916 Behelfsgeldscheine, but the printing quality varies noticeably between individual examples — a direct consequence of wartime supply constraints on the press.
