The Monaragala district coin is part of Sri Lanka's nine-piece provincial series issued between 2013 and 2014, each denomination tied to a specific province or district. Monaragala, one of the least densely populated districts in the country, sits in Uva Province and has historically been associated with Vedda indigenous communities — Sri Lanka's aboriginal population — whose presence in the region predates Sinhalese settlement by millennia.
AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel was adopted for Sri Lankan coinage partly to combat the persistent problem of coin substitution and counterfeiting that had plagued earlier cupro-nickel issues.
