The Mannar district coin series, launched by the Central Bank in 2013, was part of a nine-coin set each depicting a different administrative district — issued partly as a post-civil war gesture toward national unity following the end of the 26-year conflict in 2009. Mannar, a peninsula and island off the northwest coast, had been heavily contested territory and remained under reconstruction at the time of issue. The choice of AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel reflects a practical shift away from the cupronickel alloys used in earlier Sri Lankan circulation coinage, driven largely by rising base metal costs in the late 2000s.
