Kilinochchi served as the administrative capital of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for over a decade, falling to Sri Lankan government forces in January 2009 after a prolonged siege. The decision to issue a coin commemorating the town — just four years after the end of the civil war — was part of a broader government effort to reassert national integration over the formerly LTTE-controlled north.
AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel was adopted by the Central Bank during this period partly for its resistance to the coastal humidity prevalent across much of Sri Lanka's circulation environment.
