Obverse description The copper-nickel centre features the country name in three scripts — Sinhala, Tamil, and Latin — arranged in the upper field, reading 'ශ්‍රී ලංකා', 'இலங்கை', and 'SRI LANKA' respectively, with a row of Braille dots below. The large numeral '10' dominates the centre, flanked on the left by the denomination in Sinhala ('රුපියල්') and Tamil ('பத்து'), and on the right by the denomination in Tamil ('ரூபாய்') and Latin ('RUPEES'), with 'TEN' rendered below the numeral. The date '1998' appears in the lower field. The nickel-brass outer ring is decorated with an intricate repeating ornamental pattern of stylised floral and geometric motifs forming a continuous border.

Reverse description The copper-nickel centre depicts a detailed frontal view of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, rendered in fine relief with characteristic tiered rooflines, ornate gateways, and surrounding structures faithfully reproduced. The dates '1948' and '1998' are inscribed in the upper field to either side, marking the golden jubilee of Sri Lankan independence. Below the architectural vignette, the numeral '50' appears prominently to the left, accompanied by the commemorative legend in Sinhala ('නිදහස් සමරුව'), Tamil ('சுதந்திர ஆண்டுவிழா'), and Latin ('INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY'). The nickel-brass outer ring is ornamented with the same repeating floral and geometric border as the obverse.
