Issued to mark the birth centenary of Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the theoretical physicist who founded India's nuclear programme and chaired the first United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva in 1955. Bhabha died in January 1966 in the crash of Air India Flight 101 near Mont Blanc — a death that generated persistent conspiracy theories given the timing, just as India was negotiating its nuclear posture.
Commemorative bimetallic rupee coins of this period saw notoriously uneven distribution across Indian banking channels, meaning many reached collectors before they reached cash registers.
