Beschrijving keerzijde A detailed rendering of the Portuguese carrack São Gabriel, flagship of Vasco da Gama's armada during his pioneering first voyage to India (1497–1499), depicted under full sail in three-quarter view upon stylized waves. The vessel's rigging, crow's nests, and characteristic square sails are rendered with fine detail. The legend NAU SAO GABRIEL OF VASCO DA GAMA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 5 RUPEES appears to the left of the ship in the field.

Aanvullende informatie

The São Gabriel was the flagship of Vasco da Gama's 1497–1499 voyage around the Cape of Good Hope — the first European maritime passage to India. The Seychelles islands themselves lay along the broader Indian Ocean trade network that voyage helped open to Portuguese exploitation, giving the Central Bank a credible geographic and historical hook for the issue rather than the purely opportunistic bullion-country commemorative this format often produces.
