M.S. Subbulakshmi was the first musician ever awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, receiving it in 1998 — a distinction that took the country's awards establishment over four decades after independence to extend to a classical performer. The Reserve Bank of India has issued commemorative circulation strikes honoring cultural figures with some regularity since the 1960s, but Subbulakshmi's centenary coin reached distribution in the same year her Google Doodle marked what would have been her hundredth birthday, September 16, 2016 — the coin itself postdating the centenary by several months.
