Tatya Tope — born Ramchandra Pandurang Tope — was one of the principal military commanders of the 1857 uprising, leading forces after the fall of Jhansi and evading British capture for months through central India before being betrayed by a feudal ally, Man Singh, in April 1859. He was hanged at Shivpuri within days of his arrest, without, by most accounts, a credible trial. The 2016 issue marks the approximate bicentennial of his birth, though the precise date remains disputed among historians.
