The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 specifically to compete in the China tea trade, though by the time she launched, steam-powered ships were already making the clipper route commercially marginal. She found her real working life carrying wool from Australia. The Maldives has no historical connection to the vessel — this is a bullion-adjacent commemorative issued for the collector market, one of dozens of similar maritime-themed pieces the MMA licensed during this period.
The ship survived a serious fire in 2007 while drydocked at Greenwich, just before a major restoration project was underway.
