Transnistria — the unrecognized breakaway state wedged between Moldova and Ukraine — has issued commemorative silver coins since the early 2000s, partly as a revenue stream and partly as an exercise in the trappings of statehood. The Moldavian Metallurgical Plant in Rybnitsa is one of the few genuinely significant industrial facilities in the territory, producing steel rebar primarily for export and accounting for a substantial share of Transnistria's GDP. It is also majority-owned by the Russian steel group Metalloinvest, which tells you most of what you need to know about the economic architecture of the region.
KM# 294 is a recent addition to a collector series that has documented Transnistrian industry and infrastructure for over two decades.
