The Banque de l'Indochine issued rupee-denominated notes specifically for Pondicherry and the other French Indian comptoirs — tiny enclaves on the Indian subcontinent where the rupee, not the piastre, was the currency of daily commerce. This note's dual-language denomination directly reflects that jurisdictional split within French colonial finance.
Bramtot died in 1913, so his contribution here was drawn from earlier preparatory work; Duval completed the design. Wullschleger's engraving for the Banque de France is characteristically fine-lined, and the plate quality shows it.
