Banque de l'Indochine was established by French imperial decree in 1875, and this note — denominated in both roupies and rupees to serve the French trading settlements on the Indian subcontinent, primarily Pondicherry, Karikal, Mahé, Yanaon, and Chandernagore — predates or coincides with the bank's founding year, suggesting the authorization and plate preparation ran ahead of formal operations.
