La Roue is a local complementary currency launched in the Aix-en-Provence area under the broader French mouvement des monnaies locales that accelerated after the 2008 financial crisis. The S.E.V.E. association manages it as a convertible currency — one Roue equals one euro — redeemable only through a network of participating local businesses, which gives the instrument its entire economic rationale.
The holographic strip is notable for a note of this type; most French monnaies locales of the period relied on simpler anti-counterfeiting measures, reflecting relatively low issuance volumes and face values where sophisticated fraud simply wasn't worth the effort.
