The right half depicts a stylized athletic figure in motion, rendered in a modern graphic style, with a red enamelled flame motif above the figure's head symbolizing the Olympic spirit, and the date '2008' in the lower field. Transnistria — the narrow strip of land between Moldova and Ukraine that declared independence in 1990 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state — issues coins through the Pridnestrovian Republican Bank that are legal tender domestically yet essentially uncashable abroad. The 2008 Olympic sports series, of which this piece is part, was produced for the Beijing Games and targeted squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
