Issued as part of the ongoing "Cities of Military Glory" series, Vladivostok received this designation by presidential decree in 2010, recognizing its defense during the Russian Civil War and its strategic role in the Pacific theater during the Second World War. The city's status as a closed military zone — inaccessible to foreigners until 1992 — gave it an outsized symbolic weight that the honor arguably reflects more than its conventional wartime record.
