Vladimir Karvat was a Belarusian Air Force pilot who, on May 23, 1996, deliberately steered his stricken Su-27 away from the village of Vynaslava after both ejection attempts failed, dying on impact to prevent civilian casualties. The Belarusian government awarded him the title Hero of Belarus posthumously — the first person to receive that distinction.
This issue belongs to Belarus's long-running series honoring national heroes, struck at a time when the Lukashenko government was under intense international pressure following the forced diversion of a Ryanair flight two days before the coin's release date.
