Part of the Bank of Russia's long-running "Cities of Military Glory" series, Taganrog received this designation in 2011 in recognition of its resistance during the Great Patriotic War. The city was occupied by German forces twice — briefly in October 1941, then again from July 1942 until August 1943 — making it one of the few Soviet cities to endure repeated occupation.
