Euphrosyne of Polotsk — born Predslava, a Polotskian princess who renounced her dynastic inheritance in the 12th century to become a nun and later founded two monasteries near Polotsk — was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and remains the most venerated Belarusian saint. This coin is part of Belarus's long-running Orthodox Saints series, which the National Bank launched in the 1990s as both a commemorative program and a deliberate cultural project asserting a distinctly Belarusian ecclesiastical identity separate from Moscow's.
The four inset synthetic crystals are a production detail worth noting: their inclusion required a secondary manufacturing step after striking, and quality control on early issues in this series was inconsistent enough that loose or misaligned stones are not uncommon in the secondary market.
