Smolensk's inclusion in the ongoing "Ancient Cities of Russia" bimetallic series reflects the city's outsized military history relative to its modern size. Twice catastrophically burned — first during Napoleon's 1812 advance on Moscow, then during some of the most brutal fighting of the 1941 German invasion — Smolensk has been destroyed and rebuilt more completely than almost any other major Russian city. The 1941 Battle of Smolensk lasted roughly two months and is credited by Soviet historians with delaying Army Group Centre's advance on Moscow by a critical margin.
