Priozersk sits on the Karelian Isthmus at the southern end of Lake Ladoga, and the town's name alone reflects a contested history — it was Käkisalmi under Finnish administration, Kexholm under Swedish and Russian Imperial rule, and only became Priozersk after Soviet reorganization following the Winter War and Continuation War cessions. This coin was issued as part of the long-running "Ancient Towns of Russia" bimetallic series, which the Bank of Russia began in 2002 to document historically significant settlements across the federation.

The town's fortress, Korela, was founded by Karelian tribes in the 13th century before passing through Novgorodian, Swedish, and Russian hands across five centuries.
