Aanvullende informatie

Paisius Velichkovsky spent much of his adult life outside Russian Imperial territory entirely — first on Mount Athos, then at the Dragomirna and Neamț monasteries in Moldavia — which makes his appearance on a Transnistrian commemorative coin an act of deliberate cultural claim. His 18th-century translations of the Philokalia into Church Slavonic ignited the hesychast revival across Orthodox Slavic monasticism, a movement whose influence ran well into the 19th century. Transnistria has issued extensively in this series to assert a distinct Orthodox and Slavic cultural identity.
