Transnistria's unrecognized status — a breakaway state from Moldova since 1990, backed by Russian troops and unacknowledged by any UN member — makes its commemorative coinage a legal curiosity. These pieces are issued by the Transnistrian Republican Bank and circulate domestically, yet hold no standing in international exchange markets. The series documenting Transnistrian industrial heritage was a deliberate act of nation-building through numismatics.
The Moldavian Metal Works (MMZ) in Rybnitsa was one of the few major Soviet-era industrial facilities that remained operational after the 1991 dissolution, and its steel plant became a cornerstone of the separatist economy — accounting for a substantial share of Transnistria's export revenue in the early 2000s.
