Izhevsk, the capital of Udmurtia, was a closed city throughout the Soviet period — its arms manufacturing complex, which produced the AK-47 and its descendants, kept it off maps available to foreigners until 1987. This coin is part of the long-running Russian Geographic Series, which the Bank of Russia has used since 2002 to rotate regional capitals and cities of historical significance through small-run commemorative issues in base metal.
The brass-plated steel format replaced the earlier bimetallic construction after 2017, significantly reducing production costs as the series expanded.
