Transnistria's silver commemorative program has long issued coins honoring Soviet-era distinctions, and Novorossiysk earned its Hero City title in 1973 for its role in the 1942–43 defense against German and Romanian forces during one of the most brutal coastal battles of the Eastern Front. The city held out under siege for 393 days. Transnistria itself has no geographic connection to Novorossiysk — the series reflects a broader post-Soviet commemorative impulse to claim the full symbolic inheritance of the Great Patriotic War.
