10 Roubles Galich

Galich — not to be confused with the Ukrainian city of the same name — is an ancient town in Kostroma Oblast whose founding predates Moscow by over a century. It appears in chronicles as early as 1238, when it withstood Mongol pressure that devastated neighboring settlements. The coin was issued as part of Russia's long-running Ancient Towns of Russia bimetallic series, which the Bank of Russia launched in 2002 to systematically work through historically significant but often overlooked provincial centers.

Galich was also the seat of a short-lived independent principality in the 15th century, a period of dynastic conflict with Moscow that ended badly for the Galician line.
