The Northwest Front notes were issued in 1919 to pay troops under General Nikolai Yudenich during his two offensives against Petrograd. Yudenich came within sight of the city in October 1919 before being driven back by Red Army forces — the Northwestern Army collapsed entirely by February 1920, and the provisional government backing these notes ceased to exist with it.
Stepan Lianozov, whose signature appears alongside Yudenich's, headed the short-lived Northwestern Government recognized briefly by Estonia. The notes were never backed by any functioning treasury and had essentially no redemption value from the moment of issue. Surviving examples largely come from unissued stocks rather than genuine field circulation.
