Ekaterinodar served as the capital of the Kuban People's Republic, and its State Bank branch began issuing local currency in 1918 as White forces and the Volunteer Army struggled to hold the region against Bolshevik advances. These notes were a practical necessity — the supply of imperial and Provisional Government currency had become erratic, and local commerce needed something functional.
The Kuban monetary issues are often conflated with broader South Russian White emission series, but they predate the more organized Denikin-era printings and carry distinct regional authority. Survival rates are uneven; the region changed hands multiple times before Bolshevik consolidation in 1920.
