Catherine II's gold rouble series of this period was minted primarily to facilitate large-scale state payments and diplomatic gifts rather than everyday commerce — a 10-rouble piece represented roughly a month's wage for a skilled artisan, making retail circulation essentially theoretical. Production was concentrated at the St. Petersburg mint, which had been substantially retooled following Elizabeth's reign. The decade spanned by this issue coincides almost exactly with the Pugachev Rebellion of 1773–75, during which the empire's monetary apparatus came under serious logistical strain.
The .917 fineness standard adopted here derived from a 1763 monetary reform early in Catherine's reign, intended to rationalize gold coinage after years of inconsistent alloy practices under her predecessors.
