Pridnestrovie — the narrow strip of territory along the eastern bank of the Dniester that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 — has never received international recognition, yet its republican bank has issued collector coinage continuously since the mid-1990s. These Olympic-themed silver pieces from 2008 were timed to the Beijing Games, issued by an entity that no Olympic committee has ever formally acknowledged.
