The Archangel Branch of the State Bank issued this note in 1918 under the Provisional Government of the Northern Region, the anti-Bolshevik administration that controlled Arkhangelsk after Allied intervention forces — British, American, and French — landed there in August of that year. The occupation fundamentally shaped the note's existence: without Allied backing, no functioning banking apparatus would have survived long enough to issue anything.
The S-prefix Pick classification signals a "special" or regional issue, distinct from central Soviet emissions of the same period. Notes from this brief northern administration were produced under considerable logistical constraint and saw genuine circulation before the Bolsheviks retook the city in February 1920.
