The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus traces its founding to 1929, established by Soviet decree as the Belarusian Academy of Sciences to consolidate research capacity in the newly consolidated Byelorussian SSR. It was gutted during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, when a significant portion of its founding membership was arrested, executed, or disappeared into the Gulag — a history the institution spent decades carefully not discussing.
The 2009 issue marks exactly eight decades from that 1929 founding.
