Additional information

Transnistria's plastic coin series, introduced in 2014, remains one of the few instances of a politically unrecognized state issuing polymer specie rather than notes — a deliberate effort by the Transnistrian Republican Bank to assert institutional credibility through a medium more associated with sovereign mints in Australia and Canada than with breakaway post-Soviet territories. The material choice was also practical: the humid continental climate accelerates corrosion of base-metal coinage at a rate the state's limited monetary infrastructure struggles to address.

No nation-state formally recognizes Transnistrian currency as legal tender outside its own borders.
