Transnistria's unrecognized status has never stopped its central bank from issuing ambitious numismatic programs. This piece commemorates the 1st Spartakiade of 1927, the Soviet Union's answer to the Olympic Games — a mass athletic competition conceived explicitly as a socialist alternative to what Soviet leadership dismissed as a bourgeois institution. The original 1927 event drew over 600 participants from foreign worker and communist organizations alongside Soviet athletes.
That an unrecognized breakaway state issued this eighty years after the fact says something about Transnistria's deliberate cultivation of Soviet nostalgia as political identity.
