Qatar hosted the 15th Asian Games in December 2006 — the first Gulf state to do so — an event that cost an estimated $2.8 billion to stage and required construction of entirely new sporting infrastructure across Doha. The commemorative program issued alongside the Games was extensive, with individual coins produced for each sport on the program.
