The Thomas Cup and Uber Cup — badminton's premier team championships for men and women respectively — were held jointly in Kuala Lumpur in 2000, a deliberate homecoming for Malaysia, which had dominated the Thomas Cup through much of the mid-20th century before losing its grip on the trophy to Indonesia and later China. Hosting both tournaments simultaneously was a matter of national pride. Bank Negara issued commemorative silver across several sporting events of this period, part of a broader Malaysian push to position Kuala Lumpur as a world-class venue city following the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
KM#93 is one of several .999 silver commemoratives from this run, struck in relatively modest quantities for collector distribution rather than circulation.
