Among the earliest paper money issued anywhere in Scandinavia, these notes were produced by a private arrangement rather than a state bank. Jørgen Thormøhlen, a Bergen merchant and financier who had helped fund Danish-Norwegian military operations, received royal authorization from Christian V to issue notes — effectively a private privilege dressed in crown authority. The enterprise collapsed within years when Thormøhlen's business interests unraveled, leaving noteholders with little recourse.
Surviving examples are exceptionally rare. The wax seal present on some notes served as the primary authentication device, in the absence of any sophisticated printing security.
