USASTRATCOM — United States Army Strategic Communications Command — maintained a significant presence in Iran under the Pahlavi government, operating facilities that included on-base dining services. Scrip of this type was issued internally to control purchasing within those facilities, keeping dollar currency off the local economy in compliance with Status of Forces Agreement obligations. The Tehran restaurant scrip series is genuinely uncommon; most was redeemed, voided, or destroyed well before the 1979 revolution forced a rapid U.S. withdrawal.
Grey paper canteen scrip rarely survives in quantity. The evacuation left little time for orderly redemption procedures.
