1976 was the year Mohammad Reza Shah rebranded the Iranian calendar from the Islamic Hijri system to the Imperial Shahanshah calendar, resetting the year count to align with the founding of the Achaemenid Empire — making 1976 CE suddenly year 2535 in Iran. The move was deeply unpopular among the clergy and contributed meaningfully to the groundswell of opposition that would culminate in the 1979 revolution. Coins dated to this brief Imperial calendar window are among the few tangible artifacts of that short-lived and politically charged reordering.
