The Yemen Currency Board was a transitional institution, established after the end of British rule in Aden in 1967 to manage the new People's Democratic Republic of Yemen's monetary affairs before a proper central bank could be constituted. This series, printed by Bradbury Wilkinson at their New Malden works, was the first coinage-independent paper issue for the country — circulating alongside the South Arabian dinar it was in the process of replacing.
Bradbury Wilkinson's intaglio work for smaller newly independent nations in this period was technically accomplished but rarely lavish. The watermark remains the sole security feature, which was already considered minimal by late-1960s standards.
