Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal arms of Portugal — a quartered shield featuring castles and escutcheons — surmounted by a royal crown. The date numerals appear beneath the shield in the lower field. The legend IOSEPHUS. I. D. G. runs peripherally in Latin capitals, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The overall design derives from the original José I 5 Réis host coin, with the counterstamp applied to raise the face value to 10 Réis.
