João VI issued this copper coinage from Rio de Janeiro after fleeing Lisbon with the entire Portuguese court in 1807 to escape Napoleon's advancing army — making Brazil, uniquely, the seat of a European empire for over a decade. The distinction between KM#314.1 and KM#314.2 reflects die variations tied to different years of the Rio mint's output during this period.
João returned to Portugal in 1821 under constitutional pressure, leaving his son Pedro as regent. The series ends in 1823, one year after Brazil declared independence.
