Obverse description Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, displaying the traditional quartered escutcheon with the five bezants (quinas) and the castle border, set within an ornate baroque cartouche flanked by scrolled acanthus supporters and floral rosette sprigs. A royal crown of open arch type surmounts the shield. The circular legend CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL runs along the periphery, separated from the design by a continuous beaded border.
