Lagergeld — camp money — was issued by the Wehrmacht high command to control prisoner purchasing power within Stalags and Oflags. These notes could only be spent at camp canteens, and the system was designed as much to prevent prisoners from accumulating currency useful for escape as to facilitate any genuine commerce. The Geneva Convention of 1929 technically required that POWs be paid and allowed to make purchases; the Lagergeld system satisfied that obligation on paper while keeping real money out of enemy hands.
This denomination circulated alongside 1, 5, 50 Reichspfennig and 1 and 2 Reichsmark values across the same series. Surviving examples are common — the notes were printed in quantity and many were retained as souvenirs by liberated prisoners after 1945.
