The curved legend REICHSPFENNIG in Gothic (Fraktur) blackletter script arcs around the upper periphery. At the lower portion of the field, two oak branches curve upward symmetrically from either side, meeting at the base of the numeral, with the mint mark letter appearing between them in the exergue. Issued under four-power occupation authority before the currency reform of June 1948, these zinc pieces were struck at multiple German mints still operating under Allied supervision — identifiable by the mint marks A (Berlin), D (Munich), F (Stuttgart), G (Karlsruhe), and J (Hamburg). The reform that replaced them, introducing the Deutsche Mark on June 20, 1948, rendered the entire Allied-issue coinage obsolete almost overnight.
Zinc corrodes aggressively in humid conditions, and surviving examples in clean, uncorroded state are considerably scarcer than raw mintage figures suggest.
